Yummy Booze Popsicles

July 31, 2009

chefn

You read right — BOOZE popsicles. For our Chef’n Company Picnic (photos coming soon!) we took the popsicle, a childhood favorite, and gave it an adult kick by adding a touch of alcohol. Easy to make and fun to eat, liquor popsicles are a neat way to liven up summertime social gatherings.

We found recipes for Bittersweet Chocolate-Bourbon Pops and Lemon-Vodka Cream Pops in the Aug/Sept 2009 issue of Fine Cooking magazine. The recipes are super easy to follow and don’t require much prep time. The popsicles do need approximately seven hours to freeze, so we recommend prepping the mixture the night before your event.

A quick note before we post the recipes: Our recipes are a bit different from Fine Cooking’s. We doubled them, added some Chef’n products and altered the directions based on our preparation.

Bittersweet Chocolate-Bourbon Pops

Yields 15 popsicles

1 cup granulated sugar

7 oz. bittersweet chocolate chips (about half a bag)

4 Tbs. cocoa powder

1/4 tsp. salt

4 Tbs. bourbon (like Knob Creek)

Directions: Put the sugar, chocolate, cocoa powder, salt and 4 cups of water in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking constantly (Kitchzen Long Whisk). Transfer mixture to a container with a spout for easy pouring (Nesting Bowls). Let cool at room temperature for 30 minutes. Stir in the bourbon and divide mixture among 15 3-oz Dixie cups or popsicle molds. Freeze for about 3 hours or until just set. Insert craft sticks and freeze for 4 more hours or until completely set. When ready to serve, unmold or peel off paper cups.

Lemon-Vodka Cream Pops

Yields about 15 popsicles

5 medium lemons

2 cups heavy cream

2 cups whole milk

1 cup granulated sugar

1/4 tsp. salt

4 Tbs. citron vodka (like Smirnoff Citron)

Using a PalmZester, zest 4 of the lemons completely. Combine the lemon zest, cream, milk, sugar and salt in a large sauce pan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally (Switchit Spoon) to dissolve the sugar. Transfer mixture a container with a spout for easy pouring. Let steep at room temperature for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Juice 4 of the lemons (Juicester). You can juice the fifth lemon if necessary, depending on taste. Stirring constantly, pour the lemon juice into the cream mixture. Stir in the vodka and divide mixture among 15 3-oz. Dixie cups or popsicle molds. Freeze for about 3 hours or until just set. Insert craft sticks and freeze for 4 more hours or until completely set. When ready to serve, unmold or peel off paper cups.

Both types of booze-sicle can be frozen for up to 3 days.

The Kitchn’s Top 10 Most Useful Gadgets

July 29, 2009

chefn

The Kitchn, a fabulous blog covering all things food, compiled a list of the top 10 kitchen gadgets it finds most useful, and our very own VeggiChop made the list. Very cool beans! We’re huge fans of The Kitchn, and consequently get extremely excited when it features Chef’n products. Click here to read the full article.

The VeggiChop is essentially a mini, manual food processor. The VeggiChop is perfect for making salsas, dips, pestos, ice cream toppings and more. Small in size for convenient storage and dishwasher safe for easy cleaning, the VeggiChop is the ultimate kitchen accessory, and according to The Kitchn, a very useful gadget. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist. No more gloating, we promise.)

One of our Customer Support representatives, Rebecca, used the VeggiChop to create her famously delicious macaroni salad. Unfortunately, we devoured said macaroni salad before Rebecca had a chance to snap a picture of it (Oops!). We do, however, have a photo of the macaroni salad being made with the help of a VeggiChop. Notice the perfectly chopped red onions, celery and green peppers. All prepared in just seconds. By hand! Like we said before, very cool beans.

SleekSlice 001

Whew, our mystery gadget sure was tough to guess! After lots of pondering and creative hypothesizing by our readers, we finally have a winner. The winning guess named the correct food and also uncovered an alternative use for our mystery gadget.

What was the lucky winner’s guess?

A spiral french fry maker! Congratulations Eric!

Eric will receive a Chef’n SleekSlice Mandoline as a prize. The SleekSlice doesn’t make curly fries, but it will slice up Eric’s veggies perfectly using a serrated stainless steel blade and four thickness settings.

A little more info on our mystery gadget:

Our mystery gadget is a garnisher. People use garnishers to create decorative spirals of root vegetables such as potatoes and cucumbers. Or as Eric so geniusly pointed out, a garnisher can also be used to make curly fries!

Congratulations to Eric the winner of our Guess! That! Gadget! contest. Eric guessed that our mystery gadget was a spiral french fry maker, which was close enough for us! The mystery gadget, which is really a garnisher, makes decorative spirals of root vegetables such as potatoes and cucumbers. As a prize Eric will receive a Chef’n SleekSlice Mandoline! Ahhh, how we love contests and giving away free stuff!

Our “Guess! That! Food!” post was such a huge hit, we’ve decided to do it again, but with one small difference. Do you know what the difference is? Hint: Read the post title :)

Yup, this time around we’ve decided to test your gadget knowledge. The first three people to guess what our mystery gadget is will receive a free Chef’n product. Yay for free stuff!

Once we have our three winners, stay tuned for a follow up post showing how to use this quirky tool. Alright, start guessing!

Chef’n is feeling the blogger love

The last few days Chef’n has received lots of love from the blogosphere. Design blogs, mommy blogs, business blogs, food blogs — everyone is chatting about Chef’n. And we’re loving it!

A post by the The Kitchn last Friday characterizing us as “a small, vibrant company making creative kitchen tools,” led to an article on Fast Company’s Web site and a feature on NotCot.org.

In their own respective posts, NotCot.org described our products as “playful yet useful,” and Fast Company went one extremely awesome step farther and declared Chef’n “the world’s most innovative kitchen gadget company.”

Meanwhile the Daily Grommet featured a GarlicZoom review and how-to, which inspired another GarlicZoom feature by GadgetBase.

Over at the blog MommyGoggles, the Slicester took center stage for a  review and giveaway.

Very exciting stuff! We’d like to give a big thanks to all the blogs that featured our company and products. We really appreciate it!

The Florida Avocado

July 20, 2009

chefn

As promised, we dissected and examined our giant Florida avocado.

Our first observation upon cutting it in half was that it looked like any other avocado…except bigger. The pit was huge! Our second observation was that the avocado was juicy. The juice was more watery than sticky, but it caught us by surprise. We’re not sure if the juice is the result of being over ripe or if Florida avocados are just juicy in general.

Giant Avocado 002

Some fun facts about Florida avocados:

1. Florida avocados can weigh up to 5lbs! We’re guessing our avocado weighs around 2.5 – 3 lbs.

2. The average Florida avocado produces 2 1/2 cups of diced fruit

3. Florida avocados have less fat and fewer calories than other varieties such as Hass avocados.

4. Florida avocados are often marketed with names such as Slimcados or Lite Avocado

Giant Avocado 004

Once we cut the avocado up using a Chef’n Flexicado (yes, the Flexicado even works on gigantic avocados!) we tasted it. It definitely tasted like an avocado, but it was sweeter and had more of a plant taste. But that’s just us. Anyone else ever tasted a Florida avocado? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Guess! That! Food!

July 20, 2009

chefn

Congratulations to Dani, Julie and Teresa for guessing the correct answer…an avocado! A Florida avocado to be exact. More information on the Florida avocado to come in our avocado-dissection/examination post.

Each of our winners will receive a Chef’n Flexicado avocado slicer. Fitting, don’t ya think? :)

Mystery Food

Green, oblong and approximately 4 times the size of a tomato, we discovered this monster food in the grocery store and couldn’t resist bringing it back to the office for further investigation.

We know what it is, but do you? Give us your best guess. The first three people who get it right will win a free Chef’n product.

Look for a follow up post sometime today where we will document the dissection of this ginormous food specimen.

Chef’n Salad Spinner in Every Day with Rachael Ray

July 16, 2009

chefn

Every Day with Rachael Ray featured the Chef’n Large Salad Spinner in its August 2009 issue. The magazine dubbed our Salad Spinner as the best lettuce dryer for “the family with little cook helpers.” We think that’s great! We enjoy helping children learn the ins and outs of the kitchen and all its utensils. After all, the little chefs of today are the executive chefs of tomorrow (tomorrow, as in 30 years from now, but you catch our drift).

Check out the “Well Equipped: Salad Spinners” feature below. The Chef’n Salad Spinner is on the top right.
